1st week after Surgery
It's been one week since Devin had his first open heart surgery. The doctors, nurses, and surgeon keep affirming that he's doing very well. He had an echocardiogram this week, and they said his heart is looking and functioning very well from the repairs they made during surgery. This will only be a temporary solution until he outgrows the shunt that was put in, and will need his next open heart surgery between 4-6 months of life.
It’s crazy to think all that has taken place these past 2 weeks. He was born, had 3 surgeries, and thankfully is just truckin along trying to get well enough to come home and join his three crazy brothers!
Just thinking about the night before he was born brings so many mixed emotions. With his diagnosis, we are very aware how things could have gone much different. It’s amazing to see how very specific prayers were answered and that he is doing as well as he is despite all the things that could have gone wrong.
When we found he had an intact septum (that little hole we hoped would open), the doctors communicated that his lungs could be weaker than most HLHS babies. The goal of the first two surgeries was to minimize the stress on the lungs, which was accomplished. However, Devin is still having a hard time getting his lungs to be as strong and healthy as we would like.
All his numbers look good, and as he stares at us with his big eyes and tries to talk, you would think he’s a normal little guy with a few more accessories plugged in. But as we look at his x-rays, it’s clear his lungs just aren’t as healthy as we would like. So please continue to pray for healing for his lungs. This may just take time, but please pray for the doctors to have wisdom if something else needs to be done.
Devin is still in the Cardiac ICU, and we have two other floors to go through before he can come home with us. Until his lungs are better, we will have to stay where we are.
We have been blessed to spend some more time with our other boys since Devin has been more stable, and that has been so nice. They are anxious and just want baby Devin to come home with us soon so “we can be a family” as they keep saying.

Thank you for your continuing updates, Stef. You and your family are such an amazing example to so many of us! Praying continually for all of you. God certainly knew what He was doing when he put little Devin in your family!
